Our Lead Product:
Y-Complex – The Anti-Mastitis Treatment
Our first product is a biological
pharmaceutical for the treatment of dairy cattle infected with bovine Mastitis.
Mastitis is considered the most expensive disease to the dairy industry,
costing fluid milk producers worldwide up to $7 billion in lost revenues and
expenses each year. It not only affects the health of the cows, but the quality
of milk expressed from them. Mastitis is most prevalent in the intensive dairy
operations that characterize modern dairy farming. It is also believed that
higher yielding cows are more susceptible to the disease.
To date, while a number of
“vaccines" and antibiotics are available on the market, there is no wonder
drug for either the prevention or treatment of the disease. Vaccines have been
developed for two specific pathogens (E. coli and Staph Aureus),
but have not been found effective in reducing the incidence of the disease.
Their contribution to Mastitis treatment appears to be in mitigating the
severity of the infection once it has been contracted.
Antibiotics, still the most
popular method of post-infection treatment, are highly problematic. According
to Pharmacia Animal Health in their promotional literature for Pirsue®, a
relatively new antibiotic product, traditional antibiotics are only 20-30%
effective in curing the disease. They leave residues in milk and consequently,
milk from cows receiving antibiotic treatment is “withdrawn" from the
market several days subsequent to use. Moreover, pathogens can build resistance
to antibiotics and their efficacy may decrease over time. While antibiotics
have been developed to address certain Mastitis pathogens, our Y Complex has a
broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against most of the mastitis pathogens.
Y-Complex’s
Competitive Advantages
Yamit’s Y-Complex is a biological
pharmaceutical that can be as effective, if not more effective, than
antibiotics in treating Mastitis. The unique technology behind Y-Complex
assures that the target pathogens will be neutralized through their binding to
the carrier. By combining the use of the antibody, Yamit's technology can treat
a large variety of pathogens, including viruses.
Since it is a biological rather
than chemical substance, it does not suffer from the major drawbacks discussed
above. There are no drug residues left in the milk, as both the Complex and the
pathogen are washed away with the first milking. In pre-clinical trials
Y-Complex was successfully tested for both toxicity and residue. Twenty four
hours post administration, no residue was found in milk, and only minor local
cellular response was observed on the treated quarter.
Y-Complex could well be the first
effective post-infection treatment for “environmental Mastitis”. Yamit has
developed and tested the Y-Complex in pre-clinical trials for toxicity and
efficacy. Two of the most common pathogens causing this disease, coliform (E-coli) and Streptococcus dysgalactiae, were examined on a small sample of cows.
Results of these tests indicate tat Y-Complex is effective in treating both
pathogens, eradicating E-coli within two days of treatment. Earmarked as
the Company’s first product Y-Complex for E-Coli targets what is held to be the
most frequent cause of clinical Mastitis, accounting for 40-60% of all cases.
There are currently no FDA-approved drugs on the market today dedicated to
curing Mastitis caused by E-coli.
